COLMAN, S.D. (KWAT)–A terrible crash on Interstate 29 in Moody County Monday night that killed four people was caused by a wrong way driver.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says it happened just after 8:30, ten miles north of Colman.

A van driven by a 15 year-old Flandreau girl was southbound and had merged onto the passing lane to go by a slower moving semi.

But she was unable to avoid crashing head-on into an oncoming pickup that was driving northbound in the southbound lanes. The van was then struck by the semi, causing it to jackknife.

The Flandreau girl was killed, as were two of her passengers, a 16 year-old girl and a 12 year-old girl–all from Flandreau.

A third passenger in the van, a 12 year-old Flandreau girl, was critically injured and taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The man driving the pickup was 88 years-old and from Hendricks, Minnesota. He too was killed.

None of the occupants of either vehicle were buckled up.

The semi driver, from Arlington, was not hurt. He was wearing a seatbelt.
